Tales from The Social Club: Buildings and Bridges So High, Oh My!

Meeting Date and Time: Tuesday, June 11, 2024 from 5 PM to 7 PM

Meeting Location: Time Out Market, 55 Water Street, New York, NY 11201 (and the

adjacent Brooklyn Bridge Park)

For this week's adventure, we met in the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn. By the way, DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. We met in Brooklyn Bridge Park where we were not directly under the Manhattan Bridge but had some really great views of it.

As an interesting side note, the Manhattan Bridge also has 4 subway tracks (serving the B, D, N and Q lines) that go over it (which opened in 1912) in addition to the regular traffic that started when the bridge opened 3 years earlier. A separate bike and pedestrian path opened in 2001. While on this particular day I took the F line under the East River in a tunnel, in the past I have taken the subway over this bridge. This time I took it in the tunnel because my subway stop was on that line whereas in the past I got off at a different stop. In addition, back when I had a Citi Bike Membership before the COVID-19 pandemic, I also rode my bike over this bridge. I enjoyed taking the subway over the bridge as opposed to the tunnel because of the great views. The same would apply for taking a bicycle ride over the bridge. If you get a chance, I would highly recommend bicycling, taking the elevated subway, or walking over the bridge.

Upon meeting, we took a walk along the water’s edge of the East River where we posed for this group photo with the Brooklyn Bridge in the background.

We also observed great views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and One World Trade Center (tallest building in the second picture).

We also had an amazing view of the Statue of Liberty.

On our walk, we got to see some shipping containers (imagine what the inside of a rail freight car looks like) with an interesting display inside including one on the decline of local newspapers in the USA. These were part of the 2024 Photoville Festival.

We also saw a display on Women's rights and the role women play in leadership as part of the Photoville Festival.

After visiting the exhibits, we walked toward the entrance of the Time Out Market where along the way we passed the entrance to a theater in a unique red brick building.

After that we proceeded to walk inside the Time Out Market. The Time Out Market is a large food court which has a ton of different food vendors and just about every food and desert type you could imagine. Upon getting our food, we went to the roof of the building to eat and we were treated to this spectacular view of the East River, Manhattan Bridge, and Manhattan Skyline.

One note about the Time Out Market is both inside and on the roof, the noise level was very high so I would recommend bringing earplugs and/or noise canceling headphones. To get away from the noise, your best bet is to leave the market at a street level and eat outside in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

After eating, we proceeded to leave the market and go back outside. From there, we went our separate ways following the conclusion of another great Social Club outing.
